 Subramanya
Bharathi is one of the
finest poets that Tamil
Literature has seen. Right
from his childhood, when
he was as young as seven
years, Subramanya Bhartahi
could write verses in
Tamil. Though his hometown
was Ettayapuram, he spent
his last days of his life
in a house in Triplicane.
This house was bought
by the Government of Tamilnadu
and opened to the public
on October 2nd 1993 which
is the Bharathiyar Illam
mentioned here.
Bharathiyar Illam takes
us back to the glorious
life and times of Bharathiyar.
The Illam has a lot of
photographs of his family
and friends. Also framed
are many verses of this
versatile poet in his
handwriting which is a
treat to all art and literature
patrons. Bharathiyar’s
verse related to the freedom
movement is exceptionally
popular as it was heartfelt
and brought out the sentiments
of the people of the times
clearly.
There are a lot of things
of great importance and
relevance in the Bharathiyar
Illam, including a letter
by Mahatma Gandhi to him
on the occasion of the
opening of the Bharathiyar
Mani Mandapam in Ettayapuram.
Letters of Bharathiyar
to Nellaiappar have also
been showcased. This important
monument is situated in
the Triplicane area of
Chennai and hence is easily
accessible by way of public
