 Chennai
has always been known
to have been leaders in
the fields of education,
art and literature. Hence
it is not surprising that
some of the best libraries
in the country are located
in Chennai. Though it
is remarked generally
that the number of people
taking to reading has
dwindled, these libraries
have in no way felt the
pinch for readers as they
continue to be popular.
One of the oldest and
the most famous libraries
include the Connemara
Library which is one of
the four of India’s
depository library. It
has a fascinating and
rare collection of books
The number of books range
into many lakhs. A lot
of old books are preserved
carefully. The collection
of books have been categorized
into collection of books,
the text-book section,
a periodicals hall, a
reference room, a video
room, an entire floor
for books from the Indian
languages, a Braille Library
and an IAS study centre.
Two former Chief Ministers
of Tamilnadu, M. Bhaktavalsalam
and C. Anna Durai have
been greatly influenced
by this library.
The Max Mueller Library
is a popular library which
is located in Khader Nawaz
Khan Road. It is a popular
library for reference
texts and is branch of
Goethe Institute, Munich,
Germany. The Language
Department conducts several
classes and cultural programs.

is another famous library
which was originally the
residence of J. Krishnamurthy.
It is located in Vasantha
Vihar and has books on
Krishnamurti's life and
teachings. Apart from
these, there are books
on Philosophy, Psychology,
Literature and Arts, Languages
- both Indian and foreign
and journals. The city
has a lot of other libraries
as well like the British
Council library, the Ellore
library, Easwari lending
