Chennai is famous for promoting sports in the country and
has produced several top players in various
sports. Much of the credit should go to
a proper infrastructure for the development
of various sports in the city. There are
several famous stadiums here for various
sports activities.
The M.A Chidambaram stadium is a famous
cricket stadium and is also known as the
Chepauk stadium. The stadium has been
named after M.A. Chidambaram who was the
former President of BCCI. The stadium
goes back to 1916. Several important international
cricket matches were played here, Flood
lights were installed in the ground in
the 1996 world cup.
The Rajaratnam Stadium is located in Marshalls
road in Egmore and is used by the Tamilnadu
Police Department. The Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium is located near the Chennai Railway
Station and the Moore market complex.
It hosts Football matches and Athletic
meets. The seating capacity is 40,000.
There is also an indoor stadium here that
hosts volleyball, basket ball, table tennis
etc.
The other important stadiums in the city
are Mayor Radhakrishnan stadium in Egmore,
SDAT Tennis Stadium, and Velachery Aquatic
Complex. Situated in the Guindy Velachery
Road.
