 Marundeswarar
temple is located in the
Thiruvanmiyur area which
is about 15 km from the
Chennai Central Station.
It is architecturally
very beautiful and has
a vast complex around
it. Lord Siva is worshipped
in the form of Marundeswarar
here. The temple is supposed
to have been built around
the 7th century A.D. There
are a lot of inscriptions
in stone that give a lot
of information about the
Chola rule. The temple
has a typical Chola architecture.
The temple has several
tanks which are Janmanasini,
Kamanasini, Papanasini,
Gnanadhayini and Mokshadhayini.
The Vanni tree is a very
sacred tree and stands
very near the temple.
The name Marundeeswarar
represents Divine Physician
Shiva. The place is said
to have been visited by
two great Saivite Saints
namely Tirugnanasambandar
and Tirunavukkarasar,
who are supposed to have
had high regards for the
place
The temple has undergone
a lot of renovations.
The place is very famous
and devotees come from
far and wide. The temple
is also very accessible
and hence easy for devotees
to reach.
