 This
is a favorite getaway
for nature lovers. A visit
to Pulicat Lake and the
town beside it meant for
those who enjoy a quite
and peaceful picnic, away
from the hustle and bustle
of the city. The Pulicat
Lake is located about
60 kms from Chennai. It
is a salt water lagoon
and is separated from
the Bay of Bengal by a
strip of land which is
now known as the Pulicat
town.
The Pulicat Lake is important
in that it falls in the
route of migrating birds
and hence is regarded
as Wildlife sanctuary.
The lake is home to a
huge variety of fish,
terrestrial and aquatic
birds and mammals and
reptiles. The place is
extremely pollution free
and hence invites such
birds like flamingoes,
kingfishers, herons, pelicans,
and ducks and so on.
The Pulicat town is famous
for its Dutch cemetery.
The town is blessed with
a lot of scenic beauty.
Pulicat can be reached
easily from Chennai city.
There are a lot of bus
services. Efficient bus
services also exist. Chennai
and the surrounding areas
are comparatively cooler
in the months between
October and March. It
is ideal to visit Pulicat
t during these months
as a lot of migratory
birds are seen during
this time. This is an
ideal location for a weekend
getaway.
