This is a favorite getaway for nature lovers. A visit to
Pulicat Lake and the town beside it meant
for those who enjoy a quite and peaceful
picnic, away from the hustle and bustle
of the city. The Pulicat Lake is located
about 60 kms from Chennai. It is a salt
water lagoon and is separated from the Bay
of Bengal by a strip of land which is now
known as the Pulicat town.
The Pulicat Lake is important in that
it falls in the route of migrating birds
and hence is regarded as Wildlife sanctuary.
The lake is home to a huge variety of
fish, terrestrial and aquatic birds and
mammals and reptiles. The place is extremely
pollution free and hence invites such
birds like flamingoes, kingfishers, herons,
pelicans, and ducks and so on.
The Pulicat town is famous for its Dutch
cemetery. The town is blessed with a lot
of scenic beauty. Pulicat can be reached
easily from Chennai city. There are a
lot of bus services. Efficient bus services
also exist. Chennai and the surrounding
areas are comparatively cooler in the
months between October and March. It is
ideal to visit Pulicat t during these
months as a lot of migratory birds are
seen during this time. This is an ideal
location for a weekend getaway.
