 The
senate house of Chennai
is one of the most magnificent
buildings built during
the British era. It is
located in the University
of Madras complex on the
marina beach. The exposure
to wind and extreme climatic
conditions have marred
the building and it sees
a lot of cracks and broken
joints.
The architectural style
that was used to construct
the building includes
the combination of Indo-Saracenic
style, with Byzantine
architectural features.
There are massive pillars
ob the corridors and arches
joining the various pillars.
There are entrances on
al sides. The beautiful
domes that have different
colors add to the grandeur
of the structure.
The Senate House initially
housed the offices of
the Vice Chancellor and
Registrar. But later this
building was not used
for any major offices
due to its deteriorating
conditions. Plans have
been made to renovate
it without tampering with
the original style and
structure.
This fascinating built
by the well known architect
of all times Robert Fellowes
Chisholm, is synonymous
with the city of Chennai.
A visit to this place
makes us aware of the
grandeur in the architecture
of those times. Senate
house is an important
monument that deserves
to be visited and appreciated.
