 The
church at the summit of
St Thomas Mount was built
by the Portuguese. The
mount about 300 feet high.
It is believed that this
is the site where the
apostle of Jesus –
St Thomas, was supposed
to have been killed. The
mount has 160 steps leading
to the Mount.
The St Thomas church is
full of relics. . There
is a relic called the
bleeding cross made by
St Thomas and a painting
of Madonna which is the
work of St Luke.
St Thomas has been instrumental
in spreading Christianity
in India. He was the apostle
who was supposed to have
traveled eastwards fro
the spread of Christianity.
After establishing a series
of Churched in Kerala,
he moved to the Coromandel
Coast. He first started
preaching in Little Mount
from where he had to flee
and then came to the present
St Thomas Mount. King
Mahadevan is supposed
to have sent people to
kill him here. St Thomas
fell on the stone cross
and lay bleeding there.
This stone cross was later
found by the Portuguese
on their excavation of
this land. It has now
been installed here.
St Thomas is well connected
from the city. It is a
pleasant experience climbing
this hill. The place is
a ice place to spend an
evening of calm. The foot
of the hill can be reached
by bus, cab or auto. |
