 St
Mary’s Church in
Chennai is a very famous
place of worship. It is
located in the premises
of the Fort St George.
The building of the Church
was completed in 1679.
This church is unique
in many ways. It is regarded
as one of the ancient
buildings of Chennai.
It is also regarded as
the first Anglican Church
in Asia. The church is
also called the Westminster
Abbey of the East.
The Church is believed
to be laid down on the
day of Annunciation of
Virgin Mary. Jesus’
birth was supposed to
have been announced to
the mother on this day.
St Mary’s church
was built by William Dixon
and designed by Edward
Fowle. The church of course
had a lot of renovations
done and many new buildings
added. The buildings added
include the Sanctuary,
Steeple, Tower and the
Vestry. The roof of the
church is bomb proof.
The church has a lot of
beautiful and interesting
articles showcased. The
furnishings are wooden
and glass. There are numerous
paintings as well like
the beautiful painting
of the Last Supper which
has been drawn by an unknown
artiste. The church has
a visitor’s record
book which is very interesting
to read. This monument
is now protected by the
Archaeological survey
of India.
