St. Mary's church chennaiSt Mary’s Church in Chennai is a very famous place of worship. It is located in the premises of the Fort St George. The building of the Church was completed in 1679. This church is unique in many ways. It is regarded as one of the ancient buildings of Chennai. It is also regarded as the first Anglican Church in Asia. The church is also called the Westminster Abbey of the East.

The Church is believed to be laid down on the day of Annunciation of Virgin Mary. Jesus’ birth was supposed to have been announced to the mother on this day. St Mary’s church was built by William Dixon and designed by Edward Fowle. The church of course had a lot of renovations done and many new buildings added. The buildings added include the Sanctuary, Steeple, Tower and the Vestry. The roof of the church is bomb proof.
