 Chennai
offers a treat for the
nature lovers in the form
of a bird Sanctuary at
Vedanthangal. Vedanthangal
is located about 90km
from Kancheepuram and
is easily accessible from
Chennai by road. There
are efficient bus and
cab services from Chennai.
The place can be reached
by rail from Chennai and
Chengalpettu.
Vedanthangal sanctuary
is home to a large number
of rare birds from time
to time. It is a visual
treat during sunset as
one could see thousands
of birds flying back to
their nests. From the
months October to March,
one could see a lot of
migratory birds from far
away countries like Siberia,
Australia, Srilanka and
Pakistan. The birds which
can be seen during this
period are Flamingoes,
kingfishers. Herons, swans,
grey wagtails. Sandpipers,
moor hens, egrets, pelicans
and so on. They come here
for nesting and breeding
and by the time the migratory
season is over, the birds
would have increased in
thousands.
A remarkable feature of
Vedanthangal Sanctuary
is the concern of the
villagers towards the
sanctuary. The villagers
have consciously taken
many decisions so as to
avoid any disturbance
or harm to the perennial
flow of birds. All noisy
activities are avoided
here so as not to scare
away the birds. The place
is also relatively pollution
free.
A lot of nature lovers
and Ornithologists visit
this place regularly.
The Forest Department
Rest House has provision
for accommodation and
several ornithologists
camp there for weeks for
bird watching.
