 The
Vivekananda Illam was
originally the Ice House
of the Tudor Ice Company
in the 19th century. The
structure was built in
such a way that it controls
the melting of ice for
a long time. Later the
government of Chennai
bought the building and
renamed in as the Vivekananda
Illam in 1963.
The rechristening of the
building to Vivekananda
Illam was following the
few exemplary lecture
sessions of Swami Vivekananda
here. This place is held
with great regard by the
followers of Swami Vivekananda.
The building has a statue
of Vivekananda and also
a gallery that has lot
of pictures pertaining
to the great spiritual
leader. There is also
a huge section dedicated
to Indian culture.
One can visit this great
monument of Indian culture
on all days except Wednesday.
It’s a remarkable
structure that catches
the eye of everyone and
is located in the Marina
Beach of Chennai. The
place is well connected
via public transport and
hence easily accessible.
